CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR SPECIAL SHOPPERS!
Dacorum
demonstrates it's very healthy community spirit on this annual
event. Volunteers, businesses and the local council join forces
to give elderly and disabled people a great night.
The
tradition goes back some 23 years and is quite unique to Dacorum.
Started by the Volunteer Bureau in 1984, it now relies on many
partners to make it happen.
On
the evening, special shoppers enjoy themselves with family, friends,
neighbours and a whole host of volunteers. The volunteers offer
a taxi service, push wheelchairs, drive minibuses, operate lifts,
gift-wrap purchases and entertain the special shoppers. The shops
provide a first-rate service, offering help on purchases as well
as tempting customers with sherries and mince pies.
The
Brownies Choir provide entertainment and Age Concern are on hand
to provide details of their excellent local services for older
people.
Main
partners involved in organising this event are Volunteer Centre
Dacorum, the Marlowes Shopping Centre Management Team, Shopmobility
and Community Wheels, but it doesn’t stop there! A whole
host of other supporters get involved. Shopping Centre Traders
provide gifts for a tombola and raffle prizes include £150
worth of Marlowes Shopping vouchers.
