ELDERLY

At the last count there were over 70 different voluntary opportunities working with elderly people. For anyone considering a job in caring or social work volunteering can provide very useful training and increased understanding.
These are just a few examples:-

CLUBS & DAY CENTRES
For many elderly people getting out for lunch is very important - not just for the hot meal but also for the company. Helpers serve out meals and generally socialise with the elderly people. If you enjoy card games and dominoes this could be for you!

USE YOUR WHEELS!
In our area over 700 elderly and disabled people have a hot meal delivered every day. All those deliveries are made by volunteers. So if you enjoy driving why not join the team of drivers who work on a rota basis. Just 1 day a week from 11.00 till 2.00 would be very much appreciated

The Library Service needs volunteers with an interest in reading to deliver books to elderly people all over the Borough

BEFRIENDING
None of us like to be housebound - it can be quite a lonely business. Volunteers willing to spend an hour or so with a local elderly or disabled person are always needed. What a great opportunity to learn how life has changed in the last 70 or 80 years!

Age Concern needs volunteers to join a team of 40 visitors already befriending local people. An hour isn't a lot to give but it can make a world of difference.

A visiting scheme for elderly blind / partially sighted people, trains volunteers in blind awareness. With this training volunteers can take their blind friends out for a walk.

Elderly people with mental ill health are supported by Mind. Again training of volunteers is vital in providing a valued service.

ELDERLY CARE UNITS
Helpers needed for a variety of tasks in and around care units. Times can often be flexible and rotas ensure that no one volunteer is overburdened

Lots, lots more you can do - search below

Don't forget:
Volunteering can increase your skills and help you in your own life.
Could it make a difference to your CV?
