HOMELESS
There is a tendency to associate this help with Christmas and there are projects
particularly in the large cities which set up just over Christmas & New
Year. However the problem for many homeless people is a year long one.
HOSTELS
& SHELTERS
Dacorum's Emergency Night Shelter project (DENS) currently operates from December
to February, but is hoping to develop into a year round service by 2003.
Nearby there is a permanent shelter in St Albans. Both projects need volunteers.
Volunteers work on a rota system,
so you can offer to help perhaps for one session a week. You'll work as one
of a team. Ways you might
help:-
- Preparing evening meals
or breakfasts
- Helping to set up beds &
other domestic duties
- Providing a welcome &
social contact for the visitors to the shelter
- Providing sleep over cover
- Collecting donated food
from nearby stores
Charities running hostels/shelters also need help in fundraising, PR etc.
HELPING
HOMELESS PEOPLE FIND ACCOMODATION
Many homeless people fall into the "no-home -
no-job" cycle and it's very difficult to get out of that.
Helping people find a home, even on a temporary basis can help
them break the sequence.
Volunteers are needed for office based work and for outreach.
If you have teaching, careers advice or personal development
background your skills would be appreciated.
Don't
forget:
Volunteering can increase your skills and help you in your own
life.
