LEARNING DISABILITIES

There are many ways in which volunteers help in social and educational activities for people with learning disabilities. A great way to share your interests and skills with someone less abled.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
There are social clubs for people with learning disabilities and also one to one social support through Befriending schemes. Some volunteers prefer working in a group situation on a specific day of the week, whereas befriending offers very flexible volunteering - perhaps for as little as an hour a week.

EDUCATION
Helping people with learning disabilities can be very rewarding. You can help them achieve their full potential through formal learning at school & college, or through supported activities at day centres, where they learn basic life skills. Qualified teachers need patient and understanding volunteers to work alongside students - either 1:1 or in small groups. If you have basic skills in these areas you could help:-

• computer skills
• cooking
• reading
• swimming
• crafts

Various sessions throughout the week and volunteers work on a rota basis. Training is given.
