PRISONERS / EX-OFFENDERS

There is one prison within the Borough of Dacorum:- HMP The Mount situated at Bovingdon. The prisoners come from all over the South East of England.

There are a variety of projects which support the prisoners and their families and most involve volunteers. Volunteers all receive training.

Prison visiting
A fortnightly visit to someone who has no regular visitors can be a real lifeline. Building up a trust and assisting in the rehabilitation of a prisoner can be very rewarding. Volunteers usually take on 2 prisoners each and make alternate weekly visits.

Resettlement Project
Offers advice on housing, employment and drug / alcohol abuse.

Education Project
Helpers are needed in the education department at the prison. If you have skills in engineering, woodwork, art, computers, cookery or recreational activities then these can be put to good use. Times for volunteering your help are flexible throughout the week at the prison

Prisoner Support Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to help support prisoners when they return to the community. You can either help by befriending offenders on their release or give support if they decide to set up their own business. Also in the probation service, volunteers can help with offenders in custody or in the community.

Prison counselling
This is a new counselling service at the prison. It is led by an experienced BACP accredited psychodynamic counsellor. Volunteers are expected to offer two hours of counselling a week and attend monthly individual and group supervision. Counsellors will need to have already achieved 50 hours of counselling practice and either completed or undertaking a recognised Psychodynamic Diploma course or equivalent.

And for something completely different - Human Writes
Volunteers write letters to prisoners on death row in the USA. For more information visit www.humanwrites.org.uk

Don't forget:
Volunteering can increase your skills and help you in your own life.
