| The
Dacorum based 'Dream Team' had all met originally through volunteering
with Hospital Radio and had stayed in contact after leaving that
particular project.
In
February 2003, three members of the group Lenny Williams, Matt
Saunders and Heather Dowsett were talking about their 'radio days'
over a social drink and realised that what they missed most was
the satisfaction and enjoyment they had got from organising and
taking part in the various promotional and fund-raising ventures
they had done. They also felt that the experience and skills they
had learned could, and indeed should be put to good use. They
passed the idea around several other ex-radio friends and decided
that they ought to get together and set themselves up as an independent
self-financing group specifically to help local community, charity
and voluntary groups within the local area with fund-raising and
event-organising.
Heather
Dowsett, unofficial team secretary, then had the brilliant idea
of approaching the Dacorum Volunteer Bureau based in Hemel Hempstead's
Old Town and presenting themselves as a team of volunteers. The
first meeting with the DVB turned out to be quite fateful as DVB
manager Heather Allen, delighted with the team's offer of help
described them as something of a 'dream team'... and so the Dream
Team were created.
Within
just a few weeks the team debuted in bright yellow T-shirts entertaining
at Harpenden Carnival.
The
DVB and the Dream Team then combined forces and turned their attention
to Volunteers' Fun Day, a local event to celebrate the start of
National Volunteer's Week and to show the fun aspect of volunteering.
With the permission and help of the Hemel Hempstead Town Centre
Management, 22 local volunteer groups were allowed to take over
the Marlowes Town Centre for a day on Saturday 31st May (2003).
At the first event of its kind, on perhaps the sunniest day this
year, there were displays from the various groups, a childrens
entertainer and a Fire-Engine (courtesy of the Hemel Fire Brigade).
Meanwhile
on the bandstand the Dream Team provided music, live interviews
and announcements and were joined by the brilliant 'Live To Dance'
salsa dancers, and a superb fashion show put together by Theresa
McDonagh and her team of volunteer models from Cancer Research
UK.
Donations from shops in the Marlowes and help with the kid's Treasure
Hunt helped to make sure the day was a great success, and all
who took part felt that the main objective of promoting both the
important and the fun sides of volunteer work was very much achieved.
Now
all that needs to happen is for the Dream Team to take a moment
to catch their breath before launching themselves into their next
exciting venture.
