Volunteering - The New Year’s Resolution You Can Keep!
New Year is that time of year when many of us take stock of our lives and look at ways of improving them. The most common New Year’s resolutions people make include losing weight, giving up smoking and getting fit. Unfortunately, many soon give up!
One resolution that very few consider is becoming a volunteer. Unlike other resolutions, once you have started volunteering you are unlikely to stop, as the difference that volunteering makes to one’s feeling of well-being and self-worth cannot be underestimated.
As well as the obvious reason of wanting to help others, people start volunteering for a variety of reasons. It may be that they are feeling lonely or isolated. If so, it is a really good way of making friends and enlarging their social circle whilst at the same time doing something useful for the community.
Many use volunteering to gain experience for the job market. Others may feel that life is a bit mundane and really want to do something different that makes their life more interesting but, at the same time, fits in with their other commitments.
Whatever the reason for volunteering, volunteers will tell you that the experience is very rewarding both for themselves and the recipients that they help.
When many people think of volunteering they think of it as making cups of tea or helping in a charity shop and don’t appreciate that there are also many more different and varied volunteering opportunities available. Opportunities exist for example in Information Technology, Administration, Driving, Fund Raising, Gardening, eBay Listing and Befriending to name just a few.
