Helpers needed at The Heather Club
The Heather Club, based in the Memorial Hall, Carey Baptist Church, Hemel Hempstead provides for older people with short-term memory loss and those who may be developing a dementia illness. The club also gives relatives and carers relief from their continuous caring role safe in the knowledge that their loved ones are in a warm and safe environment.
There is a daily charge to members which covers refreshments and a two course lunch, activities, entertainment and outings.
The club has three part time staff and 10 volunteers, all of whom have been DBS checked. They provide an extensive club programme covering a range of activities including table games, painting, gentle exercise, singing, dancing and going out for walks. Entertainers visit the club, and outings to places of interest such as Dunstable Downs and Ashridge Estate are arranged. They are also always open to suggestions of activities from members and their relatives and carers.
The club takes place most Mondays and Wednesdays from 10.00am to 3.00pm. The club hires two minibuses from Community Action Dacorum to transport members to and from the club within the Hemel Hempstead area.
For more information or to arrange a visit, please call 07836 560684.
The Heather Club is looking for volunteers with particular skills in craft, artwork, seated exercise, playing table games etc. to help at the sessions and/or as relief escorts on the minibuses that collect members. Volunteers must be able to make a commitment to volunteer for at least 6 months, and should be happy to interact with members and get involved. Lunch is provided. Volunteers will play table games, chat and reminisce with the members, accompany them on outings, and help to provide a happy atmosphere. Ideally, volunteers will attend training in safeguarding, dementia, first aid, moving and handling etc.
Additionally, the current Chairman of Trustees is leaving his post soon and a new person is needed to deliver leadership to this charity.
