Meet Andrew

Andrew is a quadriplegic with Cerebral Palsy.  He also suffers with Spinal Fusion and has had hip reconstruction on his right hip. Andrew sitting in wheel chair smiling

However, he does not let this stop him from living a full and happy life!  He attended Uxbridge College where he studied Business and Retail Management, and has a love of computers.  He first came into the Volunteer Centre about seven years ago, to enquire about volunteering roles which would enable him to put his qualifications into practice.  Andrew also wanted to use his skills to help others, and to be part of the community.  He also wanted a chance to meet new people.

It was a little tricky to find places that could accommodate Andrew’s electric wheelchair, but soon we found a place for Andrew at the Paradise Furniture Project, where he could volunteer on one morning a week updating their database. This experience greatly helped Andrew gain confidence, and he even spoke about his experience of volunteering with a supported need at one of our AGMs!

Unfortunately for Andrew, three years later, the Paradise Furniture Project closed down.  Andrew was devastated; however he was not put off volunteering!  Once again he visited the Volunteer Centre.

Coincidentally, at that time, the Volunteer Centre had a vacancy for an I.T volunteer.   Andrew, with support from his dad Roger, volunteers for 3 hours a week, creating and updating our posters and leaflets.  He is also our ‘official photographer’, and took many of the photos that are featured on our web-site.  We had to make some minor adjustments to make things as easy as possible for Andrew, and he has been volunteering with us for over three years now!  Since volunteering with us Andrew has once again spoken at our AGM, and last year, he had the opportunity to meet, and have his photo taken with the Mayor of Dacorum.   Andrew is  definitely a valued member of our volunteer team!
