Volunteering keeps you young!
There are many benefits to volunteering once you’ve reached retirement age, both social and physiological. Many older people have active social lives in retirement, joining social clubs and taking up hobbies that they did not have time for while they were working. On the other hand, a number of older people feel isolated and lonely in their old age, especially among those who have lost their partners. Volunteering is predominantly a social activity which will allow you to socialise with a great range of people from all generations, allowing you to impart wisdom on younger generations while possibly learning some new things from them.
Volunteering has a very positive impact on your physical as well as your mental health. Volunteering combats loneliness, as well as providing a sense of purpose and fulfilment that may be lacking once you’ve stopped working. A study by the Royal Voluntary Service showed that volunteering increases people’s quality of life and life satisfaction scores. Volunteering is good for your physical health as well, because it increases your physical activity which is incredibly important as you age as it can help ward off certain diseases as you age. Studies also show that volunteering can help to decrease your blood pressure.
All of these benefits can be achieved by volunteering as little as a couple of hours a week, leaving you with plenty of time to pursue other hobbies and activities along with your voluntary work. Volunteering is also incredibly flexible, meaning that you can volunteer as much or as little as you like, and you are still able to do things such as the travelling that you may not have been able to do while working.
