Volunteers’ Week: The Big Celebration

Over 21 million people volunteer in the UK contributing an amazing estimated £23.9 billion to the UK economy. These volunteers all make a big difference to individuals and communities every day by improving the environment  we live in, spending time with those who may otherwise be lonely, and  contributing and supporting a wide range of essential services.

Volunteers’ Week which takes place at the beginning of June every year celebrates the huge contribution made by all these volunteers. During this week all sorts of events, from recruitment fairs, to award ceremonies and tea parties, will take place nationwide.

The value of volunteers cannot be under estimated particularly in these difficult times. Volunteer Centre Dacorum, a charity which itself relies heavily on volunteers, is the first place many people visit when they start thinking about volunteering.

In support of Volunteering Week we will be holding an event at The Roundhouse, Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead on Saturday 10th June from 11am, to promote the wide variety of volunteering opportunities currently available and to give you the chance to talk to our volunteers about their experiences.

Additionally, we aim to create awareness of the very important role that Volunteer Centre Dacorum plays in finding volunteers for over 400 Charities locally. We will be joined by representatives from a selection of local organisations, who will be happy to tell you about their volunteering opportunities.

Living Stable Lives will also be joining us to raise awareness of the free help that is available to private residents with tenancy issues.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, for a friendly chat. Don’t worry; by talking to us, you won’t be under any pressure to volunteer – but you may see something that appeals to you!

On Tuesday 6th June, we attended the Volunteers Centre Hertfordshire Volunteer Management Award and Annual Conference. Organisations were nominated for the awards by their own volunteers, and we are pleased to announce the winners.

1st Place - Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service

2nd Place – Family Lives

3rd Place - Carers in Herts. Carer Trainer Unit

Well done to all the organisations who were nominated for the award, and congratulations to the three winners.
