Eyes and Ears Wanted For Aylesbury Prison

At the Volunteer Centre, we currently have access to over 100 different volunteering opportunities covering all sorts of roles and activities, with new roles added to our list every week.

The choice is so varied that we are sure you will find one that suits your interests and fits in with your available time. For example this week the Centre has been asked to seek volunteers for a very different and exciting opportunity.

Inside every prison, immigration removal centre and some short term holding facilities at airports, there is an Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) – a group of ordinary members of the public from the local community who do an extraordinary job, and currently, the Aylesbury IMB are again looking for volunteers in our area. They recruit for volunteers during one month only and do so several times a year.

IMB members are volunteers - independent, and unpaid. Their role is to monitor day to day life in prisons, ensuring proper standards of care and decency are maintained, and that people in custody are treated fairly and with respect.

The Independent Monitoring Board at HMP/YOI Aylesbury is looking to recruit volunteers who live within 20 miles of the prison and can commit their time to visit 3 or 4 times per month, take part in training and attend monthly board meetings. The role is rewarding and fulfilling, and you will be making an important and unique contribution to the justice system.

The IMB are looking for people from a range of backgrounds, and no specialist knowledge or experience is needed – full training and support is provided. What is most important is your objectivity, personal integrity, good communications skills and the ability to work as part of a team. You will also need to be able to take responsibility, maintain confidentiality and promote equality and human rights.

A typical monitoring visit might include time spent in the kitchens, workshops, accommodation blocks, recreation areas, healthcare centre and chaplaincy.
