Support4Dacorum Volunteer Centre

Thank you to all the local Volunteers who have come forward to support the Covid-19 Crisis. County wide there was an overwhelming response to the plea for volunteers by Team Herts and thousands have come forward and registered.   The first 300 that have filtered down to us in Dacorum have been contacted and are having their ID and references checked, plus an online interview with our Volunteer Centre team. This process has been time consuming due to the logistics of working remotely but we are pleased to confirm that many volunteers are now ready to be directed to organisations that need help. The roles required are mostly delivering food and prescriptions, befriending phone calls and walking dogs for vulnerable residents who are isolated.

We have been really inspired by the way some local organisations have adapted their services to meet the now very different needs of the people they normally work with in to a way that is safe and supportive, many others are now thinking of ways they can get back up and running be it in a different format. With this in mind we have contacted hundreds of local voluntary groups who were forced to close at the start of the lock down, to see if we can support them to get back running but in a different way. This could include those who need help to work via social media or to access funding that can support their changing needs.

The use of social media has become critical in supporting isolated groups to keep them from feeling totally cut off. Dacorum Mencap have changed their social groups from being community based to bringing their members together online for face-to-face quizzes and games, led by their staff. A lifeline in these difficult times.

Community Action Dacorum normally operate Door to Store shopping trips taking the elderly living in villages to the large supermarkets in nearby towns. This is now Store to door and volunteers pick up their shopping and drop it on their doorstep. The number to access this service is 01442212888 or email
