Dacorum Indian Society
This week, Support4Dacorum would like to share with you one of our member groups who have been working hard throughout lockdown to help the local community, the Dacorum Indian Society!
Dacorum Indian Society evolved in 1972 when families were expelled from Uganda and they decided to settle in Hemel Hempstead and make this their home for the future. At present there are now over 200 families living in Dacorum that are part of Dacorum Indian Society (DIS). DIS has been running for over 40 years.
As an organisation they have been contributing to the Mayors Charity, DENS, Age Concern and the Hospice of St Francis which is one of the Honourable Sir Mike Penning’s charities. They have also been supporting a charity called Interfaith where some members of DIS have taken part in dancing at some of their events.
During the pandemic of Covid19 the society has also been supporting the NHS staff where many members of the community have been talking to the elderly people in our area to check they are in good health and offering to do their shopping. They have also raised funds of £1131 as a community where all these funds have been donated to the NHS Charities. As a community they have also been constantly running Yoga and Zumba classes online during this lockdown period to keep all fit & healthy from the comforts of your home.
As a Multicultural society they have been involved in demonstrating Henna Painting, as well as showing off traditional Indian dancing to different schools and charities. They also celebrate Navratri which is a festival of dancing and that’s not all…they also celebrate Diwali where all the young children take part in a fantastic play followed by lots of dancing and delicious home cooked food to be served afterwards.
