Dacorum Mencap is a small local charity affiliated to Royal Mencap. The aim of the charity is to support adults who have learning disabilities and their families. In order to do this, the need volunteers like you!
Dacorum Mencap run an activity club called ROAR which stands for Recreational Opportunities Allowing Respite. ROAR is a social scheme for adults, which offers different activities each week. Groups of people meet for each activity and are supported by a paid member and a band of volunteers. Volunteers are needed who can help support members get the most from their activities and have fun doing it. This is an ideal role for those wishing to work in the care field as well as for people with bags of enthusiasm who want to share it with others.
On Saturday 15th February, Dacorum Mencap will be at the Volunteer Centre in Hemel town centre selling cakes to raise money for the charity. The event is being run by a group of 6th Form students from JFK School who are taking part in the Dragon’s Apprentice scheme. The Dragon’s Apprentice scheme recruits teams of school students, assigns them a business mentor, and then pairs them with a local charity. The teams are given £100 and are challenged to turn it into £1,000 for their charities by February. The team paired with Dacorum Mencap have called themselves ‘Piece of Cake’ and they have already managed to raise over £2,500 for the charity! Drop by the Volunteer Centre on the 15th to buy delicious brownies, cookies and cupcakes, the proceeds of which will all benefit Dacorum Mencap.
