Conservation and Heritage Event
On Saturday 2nd June, Support4Dacorum is holding a ‘Conservation and Heritage’ Event at The Roundhouse in the Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead between 10am and 2pm. You are welcome to join us for a free cup of tea or coffee to find out more about the work done by local charities to protect and improve the local environment.
One of the organisations who will be there is the Friends of St Peter’s Church in Berkhamsted who will be promoting their Rectory Lane Cemetery Project.
Until recently this historic ‘detached’ church cemetery, founded in 1842, was an overgrown and much neglected 3 acre area. However, since 2014, volunteers have held regular Sunday working parties and have improved the cemetery beyond recognition.
Gravestones and monuments have been logged and cleaned. The Seat of Remembrance with its lovely sculpted dogs, which was discovered in 2015 in a dilapidated state in undergrowth, by the volunteers, has been restored and can be found next to the elegant Memorial Arch. Destructive trees and saplings have been removed, and a more sensitive mowing rotation has been introduced to encourage greater diversity. At the same time the ecology of the site has been enhanced to improve habitats for wildlife, a beehive installed and an “adopt a grave” scheme has been introduced.
There are a number of exciting projects planned including improved accessibility, a Garden of Remembrance, and a performance area for poetry readings, music, and drama.
The Friends, which was launched in 2013, have a membership of about 50 volunteers. They are a very active group, giving talks and organising community events to show the history of the people buried there. They also provide an opportunity for individuals, families, local institutions and businesses to become involved in the care and conservation of this irreplaceable heritage.
None of this would be possible without the help of volunteers, and funds from grants and donations. Last year, the Friends of St Peter’s secured Lottery funding enabling an exciting programme of conservation, landscaping and community activity – and to deliver this they need more volunteers! If this is something you are interested in becoming involved with, pop along to the Roundhouse on Saturday to find out more.
