The Dacorum Heritage Trust is now working with the Independent Cinema Office to deliver their new project – New Towns, Our Town – Stories on Screen – which will be a celebration of the unique history and heritage of the first four new towns – Crawley, Harlow, Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage.

The films will reveal a fascinating insight into the development of the towns, with footage from the 1940s to the present day, highlighting how these areas have changed over the years. The project will bring the films together and enable people to engage with and enjoy the content, seeing familiar places and even faces on the big screen.

Project Volunteers are required to assist with the community screenings and record oral history testimonies in Hemel Hempstead. If you love local history and hearing people’s stories and memories first hand, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved. You will receive high quality training and gain skills that can be utilised in future volunteering or employment opportunities.

The role involves assisting at the public screenings in Hemel Hempstead town centre; identifying individuals who would like to be interviewed for the project; arranging and recording oral history interviews that capture memories of moving in/living in Hemel Hempstead.

The qualities needed for this role include having a keen interest in the history of Hemel Hempstead; good verbal and organisational skills; be friendly and approachable and enjoy working as part of a team.

Volunteers will be expected to commit a minimum of 9 days to this project but we would obviously welcome applications from those who would like to offer more of their time. Training commences on 26th and 27th November 2018.

If this has whetted your appetite for a great volunteer role please drop in and see us at the Roundhouse in the Marlowes for an informal chat – opening hours are 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am to 2.00pm on a Saturday, or contact us on 01442 247209 and we can arrange for you to come in and meet one of our advisors who will go through everything with you.

We look forward to seeing you!
